Nurses and Midwives: Your online, Continuing Professional Development platform is here.

Nurses and midwives, as well as, other healthcare workers must continue updating their knowledge database to keep up with the ever-changing guidelines for medical practice. Scheduled continuing professional development (CPDs), also known as continuous medical education (CME) deliver such knowledge.

Nurses and midwives in Uganda receive fewer sessions if any, that aim to provide updates to these two categories of healthcare workers – and yet, they spend most of their professional time interacting with patients. Their work includes, but not limited to interpreting the prescriptions from the doctors’ notes through dressing wounds, keeping up the whole night, and ensure that pregnant women receive quality care from antenatal to postnatal period and everything in-between. But this changed when the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC) announced that it had secured an online platform to provide free CPDs to all its members from 2020 onward.

The UNMC now provides all its members with a free continuing professional development online platform and mobile application. Upon registration, members can access education from various respected educators around the globe.

Registration for the CPDs requires that members enter their names, email, mobile phone number, license number, registration number, name of the organisation, and area of expertise. Each registered member receives instructions to download the App and their user name and password.

Nurses and Midwives have an online CPD platform

The World Continuing Education Alliance (WCEA) supports the initiative to provide a free online CPD platform to both nurses and midwives in Uganda. The organisation collaborates with the World Medical Association, the International Council of Nurses and other key partners to provide such services.

Respected educators worldwide collaborate with the WCEA. They avail their content through the platform. The collaboration partners include Jhpiego, UNFPA, Commonwealth of learning, and the Johnson and Johnson Foundation. The education partners include RCNi, Royal College of Nurses, Royal College of Midwives, neo Consult, eIntegrity, NHS, and Maternity Foundation.

Register from here. You can, as well, download the WCEA app from the various app stores, as they are not restricted to nurses and midwives only – all other healthcare cadres can register for the CPDs.
