I started the course a few weeks ago as part of my quest to gain a deeper understanding of the intriguingly complex human nervous system. However, the knowledge I have garnered so far is so rich that I implore you to enrol and start living on the dominant side of the world. But who are the target audiences for such a fascinating 12-plus weeks of knowledge acquisition that seems abstract at the beginning; however, the oblivion immediately fades away as soon as you watch the first three or four tutorial sessions.

Stanley B. Prusiner, MD, rightly states that neuroscience is the most exciting branch of science – why? It’s because the brain is delightfully compelling. It is so different in every human being that such a human is not unique: the brain also defines who they are. So, why not learn a little something about the part of your body that enables you to read this article.

Medical Neuroscience explores the functional organisation and neurophysiology of the human brain by providing a framework that helps you to understand human behaviour.

As you navigate through the waves of medical neuroscience, you unravel the neural systems in the brain and spinal cord that control sensation, body movement and action; and integrate the fundamental signals that underlie emotions, memory, cognition, and behaviour. During the course, you understand the value of the various brain centres about how your body functions through an insight into impairments that accompany brain injury, disease, or dysfunction. Such impairments may be apparent as cognitive defects, inability to speak or understand language, and an inability to walk.

It is noteworthy that the course is for people with a background in cell and molecular biology or its equivalent. Nonetheless, anyone with the agility to explore can try it out. After all, enrolment is free with the provision of a certificate that you can only get if you do the paid version of the course.
