Heat waves occur when high-pressure systems trap hot air in a region, leading to a prolonged period of intense heat. They can last for several days or even weeks, and temperatures can soar well above average, posing risks to human health and the environment.

Health Effects of Heat Waves:

  1. Heat Exhaustion: Heat exhaustion is a common heat-related illness characterized by symptoms such as heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headaches. It occurs when the body is unable to cool down properly.
  2. Heatstroke: Heatstroke is a severe condition that requires immediate medical attention. It can occur when the body’s internal temperature rises to dangerous levels, leading to confusion, rapid heartbeat, unconsciousness, and potentially fatal organ damage.
  3. Dehydration: Heat waves increase the risk of dehydration as the body loses more fluids through sweating. Severe dehydration can lead to weakness, fatigue, dizziness, and even heat-related illnesses.
  4. Worsening of Existing Health Conditions: Heat waves can exacerbate existing health conditions such as respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. They put vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses, at higher risk.

Staying Safe During Heat Waves:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks and alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration.
  2. Seek Cool Environments: Stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible. If air conditioning is not available, spend time in cool, shaded areas and use fans or take cool showers to lower body temperature.
  3. Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing that allows your body to breathe and helps in sweat evaporation.
  4. Limit Outdoor Activities: Reduce outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
  5. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Keep an eye on the well-being of elderly relatives, neighbors, and those with chronic illnesses. Help and ensure they are staying cool and hydrated.
  6. Never Leave Anyone in a Hot Vehicle: The temperature inside a parked car can quickly reach dangerous levels, leading to heatstroke or death. Never leave children, elderly individuals, or pets unattended in a vehicle.
